The Story Behind Our Retro Outdoor Designs
Share
Every Prentiss Collection design starts with the same question: does this feel like a memory?
Not a photograph of a memory — the feeling of one. The slightly faded badge on your grandfather's tackle box. The national park poster in a roadside diner. The summer-camp t-shirt that's been washed a hundred times and somehow looks better for it. That's the target.
Where the Look Comes From
The retro outdoor aesthetic has deep roots. In the 1930s, the WPA commissioned artists to create national park posters with bold shapes and limited color palettes — art that made the wilderness feel grand and welcoming at the same time. Mid-century fishing and hunting brands stamped their gear with badges and emblems that looked earned, not printed.
We grew up around that visual language: lake cabins, bait shops, scout troops, state park signage. Those images carry a warmth that modern minimalism just doesn't. A distressed bass badge doesn't just say "I fish" — it says "I've been fishing these waters for years, and so did my dad."
How We Design
Each design starts as a hand-drawn concept built around a single outdoor moment — dawn on the lake, a wren on a fencepost, a campfire under the stars. We then age it deliberately: distressed textures, sun-faded color palettes, the kind of wear that usually takes a decade to earn.
The goal is for a brand-new shirt to feel like an old favorite on the first wear. No stiff, plasticky "new graphic" phase. Just instant comfort, visually and physically.
Why Made-to-Order
We print every piece to order using a DTF process. That means no warehouses full of pre-printed shirts, no overproduction, and no stale inventory. Your shirt is made when you order it — fresh ink, full color, exactly the design you picked.
It also means we can keep our catalog wide and weird. With 130+ designs across fishing, birding, lake life, and more, there's room for the niche stuff: the walleye crewneck, the vintage wren, the designs that would never survive a big-box buyer's spreadsheet.
What We're Building
Prentiss Collection isn't chasing trends. We're building the outdoor wardrobe equivalent of a well-worn field guide — the stuff you reach for every time, the pieces with stories baked in. If a design makes you feel like you're already sitting by the fire, we've done our job.
Thanks for being part of it. The woods are waiting.
